Mammino Gourmet Ice Cream |
|
Nestled amongst the sugar cane fields in the small town of Childers, Mammino Gourmet Ice Cream is to be found. Generally speaking, I’m a bit hard to please when it comes to ice cream. I know what I like and for the most part, shop bought ice cream isn’t it. It’s not that they’re especially bad, they just don’t wow me. With this in mind, I have to say that I was incredibly surprised to find that Mammino makes some of the best ice cream I’ve ever tasted. |
The shop itself is just a room attached to the back of a family home with an outside seating area next to a landscaped garden for you to eat your ice cream before heading back to your car. The car park is big enough for maybe ten cars although on the day we were there a couple of RVs had come in and were taking up a lot of the space. In fact, we all had a quite amusing time watching a man and wife team trying to extricate one of the RVs without hitting any of the numerous trees, cars or the wishing well. |

The list of ice cream flavours on offer was quite impressive with the option of buying a small tub on a stick or a half litre tub to share. There are too many flavours to list individually here but if you’re interested you can click on the picture to enlarge it as they are listed there. We chose to try the Golden Nugget ice cream from their range of Macadamia nut flavours.
As mentioned earlier, this ice cream was pretty special. It had precisely the right balance between the vanilla, macadamia and butterscotch flavours. In addition to the flavour balance the texture was about as close to perfect as I’ve ever come across. The ice cream was silky smooth and the chunks of butterscotch were of just the right size and number so you got a bit of crunch without ruining the smoothness. |
I could have quite happily bought a whole lot more of this ice cream to take home and but for the fact that I had nowhere to keep it, I would have. If I ever have the chance, I would definitely be up for another visit. |

Tip: If you are intending to visit, I'd recommend NOT to rely on the map of Childers supplied by the Hervey Bay Tourist office. It was one of those special artistic maps with hand drawn pictures and decorations that actually looked quite nice. Unfortunately, I think the artist was of the opinion that aesthetics were more important than accuracy because with the exception of the main highway, place and road locations seemed to have very little bearing on where they appear on the map. |
